CAROLINE HANANIA was born in the Lebanon and was educated in England and Italy, She studied fine art at the Accademia di Belle Arte in Rome, Italy where she also spent a year as assistant to the surrealist artist Mayo, whose costume designs are a feature of Marcel Carne's classic film 'Les Enfants du Paradis'.
After completing her BA at Camberwell School of Art in London, Hanania began her design career in the London Theater culminating in a three year residency as the designer for Common Stock Theatre Company. She entered the Film Industry working with Production designer, Andrew McAlpine as Art director on productions such as Mike Figgis' 'The House', 'High Season' directed by Clare Peplow and Alex Cox's 'Sid and Nancy'.
For over thirty years, Hanania has worked as a Production designer in both Europe and the United States and designed feature films, including 'Hear My Song', 'Funny Bones','The Mighty', 'Serendipity' and 'Shall We Dance' all directed by Peter Chelsom.
Hanania also designed Focus features' 'Evening' starring Vanessa Redgrave, Meryl Streep, Glen Close and Clare Danes. 'The Better Angels' an Independent feature, produced by Terrence Mallick about Abraham Lincoln's childhood and Daniel Barber's 'The Keeping Room' set during the Civil War.
She has also designed all four seasons of 'Turn-Washington's Spies' for AMC about the Culper Spy ring set during the American Revolutionary War.
Most recently Hanania designed the HBO feature 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks', directed by George C Wolfe starring Oprah Winfrey and Rose Byrne based on the best selling book by Rebecca Skloot.
When not working on films, Hanania works on her own Art, painting, printmaking and hand building ceramics in her studio. She lives California with her husband on their vineyard in the Central Coast.
